While the early history of Thanjavur remains unclear, the district was ruled by different kings from the 3rd century. The city first rose to prominence during the reign of Medieval Cholas from around 850 AD, with the height of its glory during the period between the 10th and the 14th century, serving as "the royal city" of the Chola Dynasty. Thanjavur has since then functioned as capital of both the Nayakas and the Marathas, evolving into a very important place n the history of Indian culture, art and architecture.

This 66 meter high temple was buildt around 1010 AD. One of the theory speculates that the Vimana (main tower) never casts a shadow at noon during any period of the year. The central stone of the Vimana os carved out of a single roch weighing around 80 tons and was carried to the top by a scaffold buildt especially for this purpose, stretching 6,4 km.

When we visited temples, as girls we had to cover our knees and shoulders.
