Udaiyalur is an ancient village situated about 7 km south from Kumbakonam. It is one of the few living agraharams in Tamil Nadu. The term agraham is referring to a community of Brahmins, to the street where they live of to the entire village. According to the traditional Hindu practice of architecure and town-planning. an agraharam is helt to be two rows of houses running north-south on either side of a road at one end of which could be a temple to Shiva and at the other end, a temple to Visnu. In Udaiyalur the traditional ways of living are still existing, the have not lost their residents to the modernity. The village is mostly known from an annual thanksgiving festival Thiruvizna, held during March and April. It is a month long festival, where people from nearby villages, towns and even from far off places gather on important days.
