Chidambaram is located on the central east part in Tamil Nadu. The city is placed close to the worlds second lagest mangrove, and is therefor also known under the name "Thillai" because of the Thillai trees in the forest. Today the Nataraja temple is placed among these trees and the temple is the heart of the city.

Chidambaram is mainly known for its famous pilgrimage destinations on the Natarahar Temple but is also a center representing the rich cultural heritage of India. Here you find references to several rich legends such as the Cosmic Dance of Shiva, the dance duel between Shiva and Kaali, and the more recent one desvribing the re-discovery of the Tevaram hymns.
