The earliest recorded history of Puducherry can be traced back to the 2nd century, as a trading station for the Roman Empire. The French East India Company established a settlement in 1674. The city was occupied by the English in 1778 and again in 1793, but in 1816 it was returned to France.

There is a strong french influence in the city, especially in the old quarters. The town is devided into two sections: The French Quarter, Ville Blanche, and the Indian Quarter, Ville Noire.
