The earliest recorded history of Puducherry can be traced back to the 2nd century, as a trading station for the Roman Empire. The French East India Company established a settlement in 1674. The city was occupied by the English in 1778 and again in 1793, but in 1816 it was returned to France.

There is a strong french influence in the city, especially in the old quarters. Here the city structure is based on the on the french grid pattern and features perpendicular streets, witch Rues and Boulevards lined with Mediterranean style houses and bakeries, although the city remains very much indian. The town is devided into two sections: The French Quarter, Ville Blanche, and the Indian Quarter, Ville Noire. The population of Puducherry primarily consists of Indians, but there are also a small number og non-indian descent residents with French passports. Altough there are only 1% og the population in Puducherry that speaks french it is, along with tamil an official languages in the city.
